About the Horizon Institute of Technology



Purpose
The Horizon Insititute of Technology was founded in 2002 by Dr. Kathy Brittian White with the specific purpose of developing technology-based initiatives in Arkansas.


2006 Grant Awards

Dr. Kelly E. Fish
ASU College of Business
Dr. Fish was awarded $7900 to establish a CD Library and Student Training Materials for Oracle 10g Database Administrator Certified Associate Program. Two new courses have been approved in an effort to graduate students with the Oracle 10g Database Administrator Certified Associated (OCA) designation. Dr. Fish would maintain the CD library and necessary training materials the students will need in order to complete the courses.

Dr. Fahad Moeeni
ASU College of Business
Dr. Moeeni has been approved for an award of $10,000 for research to determine which auto-id technology produces effective time management and secure access control as well as determining perception and acceptance by healthcare professionals.

Dr. Qingyu Zhang
ASU College of Business
D. Zhang has been approved for $4,000 to attend training in eBusiness Development using Websphere and/or WebLogic. In turn, he will share his training with other faculty and incorporate the training materials into an Advanced Java Development class at the University that will greatly benefit the students.

Dr. Russel Jones
ASU College of Business
Dr. Jones has been awarded $9,750 to further study and obtain specialized skills in the area of ethical hacking and penetration testing of computer systems. The development of these skills will allow Dr. Jones to teach a new upper level CIT course in the area of computer system vulnerability.


2005 Grant Awards

Charles D. Appleby
ASU Delta Center for Economic Development
$10,000 to enhance the abilities of teachers in eight public school systems in Craighead County to utilize technology in the classroom. In turn, this will provide opportunities for students to use and become familiar with the use of technology.

Dr. Kelly E. Fish
ASU College of Business
$4,140 to develop skills as an ASU College of Business professor to teach database software administration leading to certification in Oracle 10g Database Administration. Providing the opportunity for students to become certified in Oracle gives them the in-depth training they need to obtain higher level technology employment.

Dr. Fahad Moeeni
ASU College of Business
$9,850 to receive advanced training in RFID technology and EPC infrastructure in order to enhance the effectiveness of the Automatic Data Capture course. The Automatic Data Capture course provides students with knowledge of the latest development in data capture and enhances our ability to transfer these technologies to our regional industries.

Dr. Peggy A. Sissel-Phelan
The Women's Foundation of Arkansas State University
$10,000 to develop, implement and evaluate two Girls of Promise Conferences to be held at the ASU campuses at Jonesboro and Mountain Home. The Girls of Promise Conferences are designed to encourage girls to study and succeed in math and science, and for their teachers to develop skills for mentoring girls in math and science studies.

Henry Torres, B.S., M.S.
ASU College of Business
$4,050 to assist and mentor two public school students in developing a website and updating technology for the Craighead County Community Foundation. In addition to providing an outreach service to a local business entity, this project will encourage minority students to study computer and information technology at the University level.

  • Business Technology Center
    In 2004, a new business technology center opened in Jonesboro with partial funding from the Horizon Institute of Technology and with funds from Arkansas State University. This center will provide technology infrastructure to support technology training and information technology employment.
